Congratz on the getting married Smitty!!! Some of the most fun I had on the boat, was being a CPO Mess Crank with Smitty. While he was in there entertaining the CPOs with his Origamy and other air guitaring etc. I was always in cooking and cleaning. LOL Smitty you were great to hang out with on the ship, good luck with the marriage and have lots of fun at the Dead Concert.

Congratulations on your marriage, Smitty.......didn't you learn anything the first time? :)
But seriously, I wish you many happy years of happiness with your new foundation. It is true that behind every great man is an equally great woman. So, if you ever become a total failure, at least you have someone to blame it on. :^O

I was just wondering.. Anyone ever hear from Jamie Johns or Tracy (young) Armstrong? I literally remember everyone I served with, sure would love to be able to get in contact with some of them. And Im not sure, but Im pretty sure that Gramley and I still owe Henson, chaney, huff, coskella, argo, cheif ransom, Lowrey, lilly, Brown, McCaslin, Teats, Bash, cheif Pepik, cheif Macglaughlin, Mlady, Lapid, reulos, Bryan, Mayes, Derosa money for P.I. Thialand, Africa, Sports Bar in San Diego, and coronado, etc. And I know Chaney and Gramley remember pushing that rental car up and over to coronado bridge cuz it was out of gas just so we get have another beer before our liberty expired at 0300. DAMN!! What a great life that was. I think its apparent I could go on for ever. LOL

Stumbled on to this site while looking for BT1 Bash. Man, I owe that guy one hell of a Thanks...I would not still be in this canoe club if it were not for him. Anyway, I was looking over the many other posts and I too remember the loud 1MC announcements of "The Ship is DIW" and our families posting signe on the Golden Gate for us. Another one I loved was "The Pig is Headed for the Barn"...man I loved those runs. I steamed with Stolltlmeyer, Bash, Chaney, Weyer, Gramley, Thorne, Shearer, Shultz....another one who kept me steaming and so many others. One hell of a proud crew on the Little Ship that Could. Gotta go and would like to hear from all.

Hello former shipmates! I found this website by accident and was truly suprised by all the names I still remember. Before I continue, I just wanted tho express thanks to some shipmates who played an important part in my Navy carrer. A big thank you goes to Capt. S.E. Manning, 1st LT. Spillers, BMC Scott, BMC Byrd, HMC Trevino (for patching me up when I got my butt kicked), BM1 Thompson, and all of the 1st division crew members. I have fond memories of you all! You have all made a tremendous contribution to my maturity, and to my civilian carrer choices. It was a pleasure serving with you all.

Has anyone any idea whatever happened to BM3 Bates and to RM3 Sato?

I work for computer sciences corp. as an administrator, I administer a web site that is spread across 10 servers and I like my job. I also have 4 kid’s two boys and two girls and we live in Lancaster Ca. Been awhile since Ive had a chance to visit this site again. Its cool to see alot of the guys and Girls (Box) ;) That I served with. I gotta say, as much as I dreaded getting underway and leaving the family behind, I sure do miss it. There isnt really any bad memories that I have, they may have been bad at the time, but now are great memories. I would like to say that our crew lost 2 very good sailors during my tour, one being Fireman Butts, and the other being Vidal Rendon. Loosing those 2 guys is the only thing I would change during my stay on Pyro. They will be missed, and if ever one of their family members happen to see this site, please drop us a line. I think I speak for the entire crew when I say our hearts go out to you. Just wanted to give props to those 2 sailors, I would serve with them anytime.

After many months of not looking at the web-site I thought I's take another look. Do not see much from Shipmates from the early Viet Nam Cruises. Also noted that someone else asked about the ships store for items. What happened to it? We had our car stolen a month ago and my Pyro cap with my Viet Nam Service and Campaign ribbons and 2nd class hat pin were stolen. Would like to get a new cap and replacement ribbons and pin to put in the back window of our new car. ALSO, would like to know if anyone knows the whereabouts of any "A" Gang shipmates from 1966 - 1968.

just received the scuttlebutt spring issue sounds like the assocation is having some finicial problems. to those on ae 24 who look at this site and are not yet members or ones who have fallen away. bob hauge is right ae 24 members come on we can not let this fall on its face. especially now in the difficult times that the country we served and love so much is falling into a i like to say anti everything. for the record i contacted ten of the members that i was staion with on board and just can not seem to get them intersted. i also experience this attitude in other veterans organizations that i am a member of. bob i have a suggestion for the membership to consider. recently the dav offered life memberships that could be paid off in three years time. which makes it easier for some of us to come up with the cash. to say just put on a credit card or pay it from your paycheck and get it over with is real hard for some of us. just somethng to think about. i plan on seeing you guys in branson. i love those country music theatres there and you never know who you might see walking the streets. see ya later guys. rm1 hunter

I have recovered about 95% from my stroke, from this past December & now I have another lifestyle change to adjust to... Was just diagnosed with diabetes last month! Shoot, I just turned 35 last month... When will this end? I am back to work full time, walk 2 miles a day and swim every day as well. Keep me in your prayers, as you're always in mine. Remember, God is good! Hey Smitty, your BIG DAY is May 2nd... I'll be thinking of you : )

Wazzzup All !!! Just stopped by to see how everyone was doing. Am hoping to make it to the next reunion next year with wife and daughter. Still miss working in the hole and all the hole snipes I got to know, Best damn crew I have ever known, I remember standing out on main deck as SN Weyer, doing an UPREP up by alaska or somewhere and having snot freeze down my face, and I thought for sure it couldnt get any colder, then I seen these crazy hole snipes come up on main deck in T-Shirts to get some "Fresh Air", I knew at that moment I wanted to work down in the Engineroom. :) And thanks to Fellow snipe Gramley, I was down turning 2 in the hole in no time. I never knew a tighter group of guys, (and girls) ever. Bearing Parties sucked for sure, or scrubbing the bildges or having me and Gramley climb inside the main condensor to clean it. yuck for sure.

I remember the time we first got out to sea and how sea sick I got untill I got my sea legs. That I well never forget. After years in the Navy I will never forget the friends I made and wounder were they are to this day. I hope to make a reunion someday and see old ship mates.

Great Site!! Noticed that very few persons who served on board during my time have responded to the site. I hope they will do so in the future. I served as the Independent Duty Corpman on board in charge of sick bay. I had three corpman assigned to sick bay, Doyle, Pat, and Theodore Gogo. I served under three COs. Captain Eddie Walker, Capt Roland Bessey, and Capt. Sai Manning. Went on board as second class and left the ship as a frocked senior chief. Hope to hear from anyone out there that may have served during the same time. SAIL ON PYROMANIACS!!

The PYRO Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps are proud to bear the name of your ship. We drill at the USCG Training Center in Petaluma, California, some 40 miles north of the Golden Gate.

We are some 30 in number and under our new CO expect to grow by 100% in 2004. The Cadets are young men and women between the ages of 13 and 17 many of whom will join the Armed Forces.

We'll do our best to make you proud and to keep you informed of our activities ... those events at which we are Color Guard, or march in local parades.
